Biography:Svetlana Chmakova Svetlana Chmakova was born and raised in a small settler colony on the moon, where she first discovered her love of comics when reading contraband issues of ElfQuest.

When she was 16, she snuck on a berillium transport to Earth and landed in Canada, of all places. Slightly irradiated and woozy, she decided that she would become a computer programmer. Which didn't work very well, so she went into animation. Which didn't work that great either, so she switched to comics, where she finally found the creative freedom she was pining for. And the excuse to read all the comics she wants and write them off as research expenses.

Svetlana has fooled many people into thinking that she can draw and write. The first volume of her manga-style series Dramacon was named one of Best Comics of 2005 by Publishers Weekly, received a MangaCast Yomi award for Best Global Manga of 2006 and was nominated for a Harvey Award for Best New Series in 2006.

The second volume of Dramacon came out in October 2006 and debuted as #4 on the Bookscan Graphic Novel list (right after Naruto, Bleach, and Loveless). Which seems to indicate it's either popular or is a good substitute for firewood on those cold autumn nights (right after Naruto, Bleach and Loveless).

Other current/recent work:
  • some illustrations in the gorgeous new "Mangaka America" book (buy it! buuuuy eeeet!)
  • a monthly manga strip for the CosmoGIRL! magazine (for those that are men enough)
  • 3 very badly neglected webcomics: "Chasing Rainbows" for www.girlamatic.com and "Night Silver" and "Svetlania Wheneverly" for www.wirepop.com
(NOTE: Svetlana's family and friends may dispute the story of Svetlana's arrival to Canada, and claim that she was actually born and raised in Russia, flew across the ocean in a normal plane with her family, and that she was never irradiated at all. But all you have to do is meet Svet once and you'll know who's in the right on THAT one.)
